Chapter Six
âTUCKINGTON, WHY wonât you tell me whatâs going on?â Tuckâs mother hurried along the cobblestone path beside him. She wore her Sunday dress, as Tuck had requested, and her nicest sensible shoes. They clomped on the path. Tuck had angsted over his closet for an hour before selecting a pair of dark pants, white shirt, red tie, and a green denim jacket.
âMama, I have to tell you something. Iâm in love, and I want you to meet him.â
âHim?â
âYes.â
âWell, I guess I shouldnât be surprised after all the girls Daniel has set you up with that youâve shown no interest in.â
âSo you donât mind?â
âI love you no matter what.â
âThanks.â Tuck gave her a quick kiss and hurried on. âWeâll be late.â
âLate for what?â The sun was starting to set.
âItâs my wedding day!â Tuck beamed. His mother stopped in her tracks, but it was okay because they were at the castle door. Sir Michael swung it open.
âMaâam.â He tilted his head to Anna.
She turned a wide-eyed look of incredulity to Tuck and stepped onto the castle grounds. âTuckington, what is going on?â
âRemember the night I didnât come back when you sent me to steââ He glanced at Michael. ââborrow flowers from the garden?â
âYes?â
âWell, thatâs when I met him.â
âWho?â
Tuck took a breath. âThe prince. Iâm marrying the prince today.â
Sir Michael caught Anna as she fainted. He slung her over the back of his horse and began the trek to the castle with Tuck on a horse beside him.
âMaybe I should have told her while she was seated.â
âYou think?â Michael asked.
Anna revived on the walk. Michael helped her sit sidesaddle. âYou have a lot of explaining to do.â
Tuck filled her in the best he could, starting with how heâd met the man he was not allowed to see, to the music lessons, and finally learning the manâs secret and the truth of his curse. âAnd I knew you would want to be here for my wedding.â
âItâs a fairy-tale world we live in, Tuckington. Iâm so happy for you.â
At the castle, Frederick, Lord Todd, and Gracie awaited them in the same room as the previous night. Frederick wore a velvet tunic with a gold sash across his chest and a long sword at his side. His boots were laced up to his knees, and his tan pants were tight to his thighs. A round purse over his crotch gave him a semblance of modesty, but the way it jutted slightly forward provided an indication of power. He wore leather gloves, but his face was uncovered. Tuck feared his mother would be unable to control her reaction, but she bowed easily. Frederick extended his hand when she rose.
âMadam. Thank you for coming.â
âI am pleased to see you looking well, Your Highness.â
âWell?â Frederick snorted. âAs well as can be.â
âYou are marrying my son today. Surely that makes you in perfect spirits.â
He considered her, and a smile spread over his face. âIt does. Yes.â Tuck took that as a cue and happily embraced Frederick. âI hope you donât think this is too fast?â
âTuckâs father and I married the night we met,â Anna said.
